Our murals are site-specific. We channel the energy of the space’s surroundings into dreamy, evocative interactions of color and shape. The priority is atmosphere: creating spaces that people actually want to spend time in, and remember when they’re gone.

Over the last 12 years, we’ve designed and installed site-specific placemaking murals for over 25 multifamily + mixed use commercial properties across the US, predominantly in South Carolina, Florida, and New York. We have honed our practice over that time, and are proud of our unique and collaborative process.
We love integrating our designs into a building’s architecture when a project calls for it, and appreciate the challenge of creating murals that don’t pull focus from other design elements. Placemaking is all about the rhythm and dynamics of a full site vision— so we also welcome opportunities to create bespoke, attention-grabbing artwork that creates “wow moments.”
As stylistically versatile muralists, we don’t just stick to one design style. While we bring a clear ethos and approach to our work, our speciality is in collaborating with interior designers + landscape architects to harmonize visions into a cohesive whole.
SMALL BUSINESS
Shop facades, interior accents, signage, food trucks.
As lifelong artists and small business owners ourselves, we love helping entrepreneurs create spaces that make people want to come in, feel good, and come back. We specialize in creating custom colorways that make spaces feel warm and welcoming.
We can also create custom signage and lettering, and we offer bespoke design services to small businesses who need it. We want to help you create artwork that tells the story of your business. We can help you execute a fully formed vision or we can develop an idea for you from scratch.
HOSPITALITY
Hotels; F&B; vacation and short term rental
Every space has a feeling. We’ll help you find it. Hotels and STR’s give us a chance to really highlight the reason people visit the Lowcountry — its natural beauty. We loved envisioning The Ryder Hotel’s guests lounging poolside next to our “Golden Palm Mural.” The hotel itself went on to win a Gold Key Award for Excellence in Hospitality Design in 2022. Working with partners in hospitality gives us a chance to create artwork for spaces geared toward visitors to the Lowcountry and the coast, and gives us both an opportunity to showcase our unique perspective on the natural world that makes this area of the country so special. Both of our childhoods were shaped by the SC oceans and creeks, and that comes through in our work whether abstract or realistic.
HOME
Nurseries; living rooms; workspace; fitness; dens + studios.
What a gift to be able to create artwork for you to live with! The murals we create for homes are by far our most intimate. Our designs are inspired by you, your family, and the space you want to cultivate. We begin with a conversation with you to explore the colors and imagery that feel true to you, and the feelings that you want to cultivate in your home. We love creating pieces that you’ll want to look at and live with every day — from fun, whimsical scenes that will spark the imagination of the little ones in your home, to sophisticated, abstract color fields for the most tasteful among you — we’ll create artwork that will live alongside you and represent your unique perspective for years to come.
AMENITY SPACES
Patios; clubhouses; gyms; lobbies
We are experts at integrating art into everyday spaces. We’ve heard it over and over again — our work energizes high traffic amenity areas without feeling overwhelming. Something special happens when large scale artwork seeks to transform the experience of lounging poolside, working out, or even just checking the mail. Residents can feel the extra thought put in to their everyday experiences, and that extra thought adds value that has tangible impact on quality of life.
AESTHETIC REMEDIATION + SCREENING
Retaining walls, utility infrastructure, architectural eyesores.
Some of our most successful projects involve often overlooked canvases that present as areas to ignore, or even as areas that are a necessity but present as, well, ugly. We’ve transformed giant retaining walls that had to be built to protect infrastructure into opportunities for artwork that spark conversation. We’ve turned giant trash compactors into breezy abstract artwork. We’ve turned walls that separate highways from living spaces into magical little nooks full of inspiration to be discovered. We’ve turned walls that are necessary for practical purposes into artwork that creates an opportunity to build community.
SCHOOLS
Entrances; cafeterias; gyms; classrooms
When it comes to the importance of cultivating inspiration and positive energy, there is nowhere quite as special as a school. From pre-schools to universities, we collaborate seamlessly with administrative staff to incorporate your school’s colors and branding into an aesthetic and visual message that resonates with students. These are some of our most rewarding projects, and we welcome inquiries.
ABOUT US
Pure Hart Studio is McKenzie and Elliott Eddy-Smith. Our speciality is concocting dreamy color palettes that express the unique personality of a place.
We are often inspired by the mystical feelings that come from time spent in nature: meandering through the Lowcountry's tidal creeks, surfing off the Florida coast, and painting at the foot of the Catskill Mountains in Woodstock, New York. There's a well-known (and, if we're honest, well-worn) aesthetic of mountain kitsch and coastal cliché; then there's a deeper world full of magic, atmosphere, and inspiration. That's the world we live in, and channel into everything we create.
After a decade of painting murals across the country from New York to Texas, we're happy to call Bluffton, SC home (and still travel nationwide for projects). We create murals for homes, small businesses, and large-scale developments alike. Alongside our murals, we design specialty clothing, prints, and goods inspired by nature and its many hidden portals. You'll find our collection at markets across the Lowcountry, in shops from Brooklyn to Boston, and always online.
FAQs

We calculate mural budget based on design complexity, time, logistics (exterior/interior, height, etc.), and level of creative development. We provide fully transparent estimates at the beginning of each project, and leave room in the creative process to refine the budget to meet your goals once you see design options.

Installations on site take as little as 1 day for a home/small business, up to two weeks for multi-story large scale exteriors. Creative development falls into a similar range. We have refined a process that can adapt to a wide range of projects and budgets. While we specialize in complex large scale exteriors projects, we absolutely love smaller work with a more intimate scale and approach.

Whether the project is big or small, our process has a few key steps:
1) Complementary consultation: Discuss overall vision, project goals, timeline, and general budget comfort zones. Look at other work in our portfolio for general scope and style reference.
2) Design + Engagement Fee: We deliver a site visit (where feasible), initial concept sketches, color palettes, artist notes, and budget options. We review these with you, and refine through 1–3 rounds until we have a perfected photorealistic mockup of the mural design.
The amount of this fee varies widely depending on the type of project. For smaller projects this may be a nominal flat rate. For larger development projects, this is typically about 20% of the estimated budget.
3) Finalize Budget: Based on the final mock-up, we finalize the budget with you, lock in a date, and invoice for a deposit.
4) Installation: We paint your mural! Upon completion, we charge you for the balance.
